Saint David’s School and Kildare College Working Scientifically

As part of Saint David’s School Gifted and Talented Programme, some students from Years 5 - 7 participated in Science Investigations in a joint project with Kildare College.

The project was an exciting, innovative and collaborative project that enabled students to select an area of Science that they were interested in. Students then planned and conducted an investigation. The results were analysed and findings informed scientific conversations. The students showed that they were able to convey scientific concepts in a clear and interesting manner.

During the course of Term 2, Tina Neate, Physics and Chemistry teacher from Kildare College, assisted Saint David’s students with their ideas and investigations. Students had the opportunity to utilise the Kildare College science resources.

Science experiments ranged from building rockets, electrical circuit construction, projectile motion, fingerprinting analysis, freezing points of different chemicals, how elasticity is affected by different temperatures, measuring heart rates and observing boat speeds.

Awards were given for the following:
• Most innovative Science Project
• Best Scientific Method
• Most improved Skill Development

This was an exciting project because it allowed the students to explore and experiment during their investigations. The project enhanced students‘ scientific skills as well as providing a wonderful opportunity for Saint David’s Parish School and Kildare College to work together.

On behalf of St David’s School, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Lisa Zujic thanked Tina Neate for her endless enthusiasm, energy and expertise that she brought to the joint project this term.
“It truly was an excellent exercise having a primary and secondary school working together on a collaborative project”, Lisa said.

St David’s students look forward to the next joint school project opportunity!
