Intergenerational playgroups are truly something special — an experience that enriches the lives of both the young and the older members of our community. These playgroups are more than just a space for children to play; they are a vital platform for different generations to come together, share wisdom, and build meaningful relationships.
Emily Bowden, an Early Years Consultant at Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) highlights the importance of this program: “We provide opportunities, training and support through our Supported Playgroups in Catholic Education (SPiCE) Program ensuring playgroups establish and sustain high quality Intergenerational programs that enable all playgroup participants to build meaningful connections, play and have fun together.”
For older adults, intergenerational playgroups provide a sense of purpose and belonging. Many older Australians face social isolation, but through these playgroups, they have the chance to reconnect with the community, share their life experiences, and find joy in the laughter and energy of children. This interaction can improve mental health, reduce feelings of loneliness, and bring a renewed sense of vitality. Helen, a former Executive Assistant to the Principal at Sacred Heart College and St Michael’s College, shared her experience: “I have really enjoyed mixing with the younger children and helping them with craft.”
For children, the benefits are equally profound. They receive the love, attention, and wisdom of older adults, which helps them develop respect and empathy for others. Children learn important social skills, hear stories from times gone by, and understand the value of patience and kindness through these interactions. Stacia, an older friend whose family has deep roots in the community, reminisced, "I remember coming here and playing bingo with the Good Shepherd Nuns many years ago, it has changed a bit since then."
At St John’s Intergenerational Playgroup, we are excited to offer a free weekly program that brings together parents, children, and our cherished older friends. This initiative, supported by CESA, Meals on Wheels SA, and Playgroup SA, is all about creating a space where hearts and minds can grow together. Whether it’s storytelling, playing games, or participating in creative activities, everyone has something to contribute and gain. A young mother attending the group beautifully captured the spirit of the playgroup, saying, “It has been lovely to connect with different generations,” while another mother remarked on the positive impact of the interactions, noting, “A small part of my day has had a large impact on the older friend’s day.”
We warmly invite those aged 50+ and families with children under 5 years old to join us every Friday during school terms from 9am to 10:30am at St John’s the Baptist Catholic School, 342 Anzac Highway, Plympton. Come and be a part of this vibrant community, where generations come together to raise hearts and minds.
