The Marine Discovery Centre (MDC), located at Star of the Sea School,Henley Beach, was delighted to host a visit from Minister for Education and Training Senator Simon Birmingham and Local Member Matt Williams MP recently. Minister Birmingham, who also brought along his youngest daughter, was very impressed with the centre and was aware of the funding issues the centre faces. The self-funded MDC has visitors from all areas of South Australia, including a recent visit from a school from Victoria, and from all State, Independent and Catholic sectors in SA. Sadly, the MDC is the only centre left in Adelaide that primary school children can visit for a hands-on science experience.
Minister Birmingham said he was impressed with the quality of the work including the interactive models, coastal signs, website initiatives, the Marine Biologists and Aboriginal projects.
Mr Williams highlighted some opportunities for funding, including potential partners and local possibilities. He also stated,
“I have been engaged with the Marine Discovery Centre for some time and am impressed by their commitment to educate children about the importance of our marine environment. It is important that the next generation learn to care for our beaches, oceans and marine life to ensure they are around for future generations to enjoy. I will keep fighting to ensure the Marine Discovery Centre is properly funded to continue their good work in this space in South Australia.”
The MDC has won International recognition for its work during the past 18 years with over 45 various Awards and is very hopeful that our Federal Government will support its continued evolvement.
Twenty students from Catholic schools in South Australia have been named among the winners in two major state-wide Humanities competitions.
Earlier this year, senior school students from across South Australia were invited to enter the 2024 Premier’s Anzac Spirit School Prize and the Muriel Matters Awards.
