“nurturing the mustard seed: a future full of hope”

Building on the 41 schools that have already undertaken the “nurturing the mustard seed” experience, teams of leaders from St David’s, Rostrevor College, St Catherine’s,  St Pius X, St Francis De Sales, St Mary Magdalen’s, Stella Maris, St Monica’s and Caritas College attended the recent three day gathering at McCracken Country Club, Victor Harbor.

Spirituality can be understood as “Our response to the touch of God in our life.” (Pat O’Shea). Participants were invited to explore what this may mean for themselves, their staff and their school communities.

Over the 3 days, there was time:

  • for stillness and engagement with their own spiritual growth through the lenses of the Year of Mercy and Laudato Si,
  • to experience the Eucharist as a call to justice, and
  • to develop strategies and capabilities to design and plan staff spiritual and religious formation in their school for 2016-2017.

Participants enjoyed the opportunities to engage with spiritual readings, personal reflection, prayer, and journaling.  During the course of the program they engaged with the cycle of spirituality and explored Theory U as an approach to enhancing Catholic Identity and Staff Spiritual and Religious Formation in their schools.

Highlights for participants included the opportunity to network with other school leaders, celebrate Sunday Eucharist and dine together in camaraderie as they explored the meanings of leadership as Witness, Specialist and Moderator amid much laughter.

The program explored ways to support school leaders in establishing new initiatives in their schools in the area of spiritual and religious formation.  Schools had the opportunity to consider what is happening in their schools now and time to plan new initiatives.   The four team members of the Staff Spiritual and Religious Formation team will companion the participating schools on their journey throughout 2016-2017.

“So valuable for me as a beginning leader. Thought provoking, great network and  confidence building.”

“Such time is always precious – allows for slow thinking, deep contemplation and the ability to focus on what is at the core of everything we do.”
