Reflections by Helen O’Brien, Director Catholic Education SA
I had the pleasure of visiting Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School recently to meet students, staff and parents. Principal, Mark Batistella took me on a tour of his school. What a delight! In each of the classrooms I saw children deeply engaged with learning that is relevant, interesting and challenging. All of them were doing this in classroom environments where great attention had been given to the climate, décor, furniture selection and arrangement, documentation of children’s work and the relationships.
I was particularly impressed with the work being done by the staff where specific and intentional focus is applied to the development and refinement of a range of what I would call personal qualities and learning behaviours. Some of the students spoke to me about these elements and were able to describe their strengths as well as some of those areas where ongoing development is underway.
Mark ensures that student voice is heard and is authentically part of the decision making processes of the school. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by two students in relation to the decisions being considered about the students’ dress for their end of year Mass and dinner. They were gathering a range of views that they would open up for a greater discussion with leadership!
It was a delight to be part of the community for the morning: a warm and inviting school where excellent learning occurs. Well done to Mark Battistella, his staff, parents and students.
Twenty students from Catholic schools in South Australia have been named among the winners in two major state-wide Humanities competitions.
Earlier this year, senior school students from across South Australia were invited to enter the 2024 Premier’s Anzac Spirit School Prize and the Muriel Matters Awards.
