The Mercedes College Social Justice League Leaders have joined forces with Leaders from St Mary’s, St Dominic’s Priory and Blackfriars Priory to raise social justice awareness between the four schools.
The three representative committees have united as a leadership group to come up with ways to raise issues within their school communities setting up a can drive for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. The schools, including Christian Brothers College, are competing against each other to see who can collect the most cans!
In another bid to raise awareness, Mercedes Leaders, in collaboration with St Dominics Priory and Blackfriars Priory held a Year 10-12 Movie Night last Friday to premier The exodus by local writer, film maker and educator Paramita Roy. The 20 minute film has two main themes to be explored: on one level, the arrival of boat people and refugees; and the meaning of life itself. Proceeds from the Movie Night went to the Welcome Australia Foundation which is aimed at engaging everyday Australians in the task of cultivating a culture of welcome in our nation.
Additionally last Saturday, the combined schools volunteered for St Vincent de Paul, buddying up with children of families who are supported by St Vinnies. To the delight of the children, the day included opportunities to make pizzas, to play basketball, soccer and netball.
