Students cultivate a culture of welcome

National Chief Executive Officer of Welcome to Australia, Mohammad Al-Khafaji, was presented with a cheque from funds raised by Mercedes College, Blackfriars Priory School and St Dominic’s Priory College Social Justice League Leaders at an assembly hosted by Mercedes College Leaders on Friday 9 September, 2016.

The three schools joined forces earlier this year to come up with ways to raise awareness within their school communities about social justice issues coordinating a Movie Night to raise funds for the Welcome to Australia Foundation.

Year 12 Mercedes Social Justice League Leader, Gabrielle Capasso said a common goal to raise awareness of social justice issues was their reason for joining forces. “An initial meeting at St Dominic’s with the prefects generated more meetings where ideas were discussed and projects were organised including a Movie Night and an Interschool Can Drive when nearly 6000 cans of food were collected.”

Principal Mr Peter Daw said, “As a strong values centred Catholic school Mercedes College social justice issues are at the core of student led projects and are a part of the way of life for all students at the College. We are delighted with the work the Social Justice Leaders have achieved this year in their endeavour to raise awareness about social issues. ”

The Welcome to Australia Foundation is aimed at engaging everyday Australians in the task of cultivating a culture of welcome in our nation by finding different ways for individuals, families, businesses and other organisations to work together to continue to develop the values of diversity and compassion.
