Your Excellency and Mrs. Le, I present to you The Marine Discovery Centre. 20 years ago the Marine Discovery Centre was born in Mr Tim Hoile’s classroom at Star of the Sea School at Henley Beach, with Sister Enid Wood as School Principal.
Tanks of marine creatures lined the balconies and the students were excited to participate in learning, with hands-on, about sharks, seahorses, spider crabs and star fish to name a few.
Sister Enid Wood was a driving force in establishing the Marine Discovery Centre at the school where busloads of students and Community Groups from around the State come to use interactive models and educational science equipment including a dissection DVD.
Director Tim Hoile was for six years Chair of the National Marine Discovery Centre Network, and with Sister Enid they have been key members and Leaders of the Education Landcare Forum and the Marine Education Society of Australasia.
200,000 Australians annually are involved in Marine Science Education, and Tim Hoile is key speaker and presenter at numerous Education Conferences both National and International. The Marine Discovery Centre at Henley Beach has hosted 50 Environmental Science Workshops.
Tim continues to source funding for education and marine science projects.
Artist-in-Residence, Alison Harvey and Tim have designed the first metropolitan coast walking trail in South Australia, the first Marine Science Education pack for Primary Schools in South Australia and seven Science Books have been written.
The Marine Discovery Centre’s Marine Science Education, a much awarded programme, raises awareness in the Community and ensures protection of Marine Flora and Fauna.
