Christian Brothers College - 140th anniversary

Christian Brothers College celebrated its 140th Anniversary yesterday with a moving Feast of the Assumption Mass at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, a tradition which acknowledges the importance of Blessed Mary to the Irish Brothers of CBC.  Bishop-elect Fr Charles Gauci, a dear friend of the College, celebrated mass along with Monsignor Robert Aitken who has served the College since 1958 and numerous CBC Old Collegian priests.

Also in attendance were Dr Neil McGoran Director of Catholic Education SA and former CBC staff member; Br Paul Oakley cfc, President of EREA; Dr Wayne Tinsey Executive Director of EREA; former Principal Br Patrick Cronin, Christian Brothers, Board Chairs and members past and present and the wider community.

The college’s long tradition of educating boys in the heart of Adelaide was literally paraded along Wakefield Street following the Mass.  A long line of purple processed down the city’s main thorough-fare on Wakefield Street with a police escort, bringing motorists and bystanders to a standstill. The procession was led by young students from the College’s Children’s Centre and Junior School, followed proud Senior boys and their prefects singing the school’s song.  The College’s distinctive Purple and White moving with purpose as the boys walked past the college’s Wakefield Street home which has produced many notable scholars over its long history; most recent being last year’s Young Australian of the Year, Paul Vasileff.

CBC Principal, Noel Mifsud, acknowledging the tremendous work of current and past staff and students said ‘CBC’s 140 year tradition as a Catholic Boys School in the Edmund Rice tradition has enabled our children to be the authors of their own destiny.  CBC educates children to lifelong learning as they dance towards the future with great hope.  A CBC graduate is a person of  faith, excellence, community and compassion.’
