Jenny Lee from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College has won the Year 12 competition 'Wool4School' - encouraging budding fashion designers to show the nation what they’re made of. In winning the competition, Jenny has gained a scholarship to the Whitehouse Institute of Design and she will also receive a choice of a Bernina Sewing Machine or overlocker to the value of $1500 and a subscription to Frankie magazine.
Designing for rapper, singer-songwriter CL, Jenny’s winning design consists of high-waisted wool denim jeans, a bodysuit, fishnet tights and a voluminous skirt which can be turned into an umbrella - the perfect stage accessory.
Growing up, Jenny’s dreams of pursuing a career in design were challenged by those around her, and comments that “Fashion isn’t going to pay your bills” had started to discourage her. Design and Creative Arts classes at school became an outlet for Jenny’s creativity and she realised that her passion had never been extinguished.
In response to her win, Jenny said:
“It is a great honour to win the 2018 prize. As a Creative Arts student, it feels extraordinary to be recognised for the work I achieve outside of my STEM subjects. This is also a great way to inspire other students pursuing a career in the visual arts and to reassure them that as long as they exert energy and try hard, anything is achievable.”
Wool4School is an annual student design competition that is open to all Australian school students from years 7 to 12, the Wool4School competition invites students to design an outfit using a minimum 80% Australian Merino wool. The outfit must contain a minimum of one piece with a maximum of four pieces, and show the student’s creative and innovative side.
Whitehouse Institute of Design founder Leanne Whitehouse said:
“Jenny shows exceptional talent in drawing and fashion design. Her fashion knowledge and creative approach to this design competition showed maturity and enormous fashion flair. Jenny’s understanding of the many amazing properties of wool textiles was successfully addressed in her contemporary dress design and her design of her fashion accessories. I look forward to welcoming Jenny to either our Melbourne or Sydney campus in 2019 and to the Bachelor of Design.”
