St Michael’s College Students Pursuit to Perform

An audience of close to 1,000 filled St Michael’s College Secondary Campus’ Founders Hall across two sold out performances on 24 and 25 September. Audience members were treated to the talents of the cast, crew and College band for the Secondary Campus’ musical – “The Wedding Singer”. Bringing back the nostalgia of the 80s, “The Wedding Singer” is a feel good show and a reminder that, in life, if we stay true to ourselves, everything else will fall into place.

The musical came to life when a dedicated group of students passionately pleaded their case for a Secondary Campus musical. This group presented their reasons and vision to the College leadership team and the Secondary Campus Drama Coordinator, Mrs Becker. The process undertaken by the group proved the drive, determination and passion that our students of today have.

Since then, preparations for the Secondary Campus’ first Year 7 to 11 musical have been in the making for months, providing a unique opportunity for cross year level and department interaction including Drama, Dance, Art and Music.

What the audience had to say:

  • “After months of preparation and rehearsal's, the students and staff of St Michael’s College have put on a fantastic and entertaining show. There are so many talented students who are extremely dedicated and passionate about the performing arts.” Mathew Davis

  • “I attended the opening night of the performance and was instantly transported back to the 80s with the cabaret style theatre and decorations. The quality of the singing, dancing and acting of students was outstanding and thoroughly entertaining. Not to mention the College band who did an amazing job accompanying the performers in all their musical numbers. It was great to see so many young students involved and having a great time on stage.” Monique Montesi

Lead cast members Vincenzo and Olivia were extremely appreciative for the experience, sharing the following sentiments:

  • "Being a part of the St Michael's musical has been an incredible experience for not only myself but everyone else in the cast. It has been a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, gain confidence and bring joy to the greater College community. I am very grateful for all the hard work put in by staff, students and families." Olivia Higgins (Year 10 student) who played the role of Julia Sullivan

  • “It was an amazing experience being a part of the wonderful cast and crew of St Michael’s musical. I am so glad that all our effort and hard work has paid off and that we performed a show that even Adam Sandler would be proud of.” Vincenzo Triulcio (Year 11 student) who played the role of Robbie Hart

The St Michael’s College Primary Campus will also be presenting their musical “World’s Apart” in Term 4 at the Parks Theatre. Similarly, in 2015, a Year 4 student approached staff member Ms Gaertner-Jones asking for an opportunity to be able to sing and dance. A musical was the logical way to bring the two together.

The hard work and effort put in by all involved has been both rewarding to the staff and students. It is clear to see how students develop as they build their skills in a production capacity and gain confidence when they experience success in a public forum. Many talents are showcased which otherwise could have remained hidden.
