St Patrick’s Technical College, Edinburgh North is seeing positive results from the inaugural Information Technology (IT) program, with three students securing the first traineeships for the College in the IT industry.
The senior students have been studying a Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology while completing their SACE and have been mentored by major tech companies such as DXC Technology, Saab Australia, PMB Defence and BAE Systems Australia.
Student Brock Pearson has secured a traineeship with Maxima and hosted by Calvert Technologies, a comprehensive IT solutions, services and support provider and has commenced his traineeship undertaking a Certificate IV in IT Networking.
Students Ethan Cooper-Smart and Cameron Grimmond have been accepted into the first South Australian Microsoft Traineeship Program, employed through MEGT’s Group Training program, and have been placed with a host employer within the Microsoft Australia network for on-the-job training and development. Students commenced their traineeship in September 2019, undertaking a Certificate IV in Information Technology.
When asked what this traineeship means to him, Cameron said “this traineeship means that I can continue to develop my knowledge of IT and grasp a better understanding while working under the wing of an employer. I have the opportunity to learn what industries use and how they use it.”
Clearly passionate, Cameron added, “I chose the IT industry because I’ve been interested in it for many years. I got my first computer back when I was four years old. I’ve just wanted to follow my interest and learn more about the industry”.
The IT students have been involved in various projects mentored by major tech companies, enabling them access to the latest technologies used in the industry and strengthening their prospects for employment.
“IT traineeships are essential for today’s environment to make sure we are investing in our young people and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to meet the workforce needs”, explained St Patrick’s Technical College’s STEM Faculty Manager Bradley Sheridan.
The St Patrick’s team works with an extensive network of employers, industry associations, training providers and group training organisations to source opportunities for students to start their trade careers.
“When our students obtain traineeships, they continue to learn the valuable and practical skills required in the industry within a real work environment and mentored by professionals who have a wealth of knowledge”, added Bradley.
Nearly 1,000 St Patrick’s Technical College students have commenced apprenticeships/ traineeships in South Australia since the College was established in January 2007.
Three students from within Catholic Education South Australia schools were invited to Government House to receive an Order of Australia Student Citizenship Award.
