Schools Clean Up Day 2020

Students in Catholic schools across South Australia have taken part in the annual Schools Clean Up Day on Friday February 28.

Schools Clean Up Day is an initiative of Clean Up Australia, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday March 1.

Through participating in a Clean Up event, students learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community.

The day allows students and teachers to engage with topics of the environment and sustainability and learn ways to reduce the amount of waste in their environment.

It's a day when students and teachers work together to clean up an area which is special to them. It can be their school grounds, beach, playground, a local park, or maybe bushland near their school.

Schools can register their event for free and are provided with a Clean Up kit containing bags, gloves and everything else schools need to host a Clean Up event.

Star of the Sea School, Henley Beach participates in Schools Clean Up Day every year. “Star of the Sea School is fortunate to be located only meters away from the beautiful beaches of Henley Beach, which enables the school to develop a deep connection with the local marine environment”, said Principal Joe De Tullio.

“Clean Up Australia Day gives the school community an opportunity to look after the local environment and be stewards of God’s Creation”.

Australia creates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year. Only 12% of this is recycled with the rest ending up in our parks, roadsides, bush, waterways, oceans or in landfill as rubbish.

On Clean Up Australia Day, all Australians are called to step up to clean up, to collect as much waste as possible before it causes harm.

Clean Up Australia Day is the nation's largest community-based mobilisation event, and last year more than 680,000 volunteers removed over 15,000 ute loads of rubbish from the 6,901 registered locations across the country.

Well done to all the participating Catholic schools across South Australia that have taken part in Schools Clean Up Day.
