Four Catholic school students receive Governor’s Civics Awards

Pictured here is Sacred Heart College Year 12 student, Millie Brown with her father at a ceremony for the Governor’s Civics Awards at Government House last month. Millie received an individual award for Civics from the Governor of South Australia in the Stage 1 and 2 Category. Millie submitted an essay on the right to protest and was one of only 6 students in the State to be selected. At the ceremony, Millie met the Governor and received her award.

The following Catholic School students were also recipients of the Governor’s Civics Awards:

Parth Raina, Year 5 – Christian Brothers College
Sahibjot Kaur, Year 8 – Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College
Shinepreet Kaur, Year 9 – Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College – Year 9

What amazing achievements by these four students! Well done.

The Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools program provides the opportunity for young South Australians to develop their capacity and awareness in the area of active and informed citizenship in a multicultural and democratic society. The awards aim to highlight the importance of civics and citizenship education in the South Australian historical context and be a conduit for quality student engagement and learning in these areas. The program is open to students from Years 5 to 12 and involved entries for Individual, Group and School categories.

Lidya Mungu-Ashuze, an old scholar from Tenison Woods College Mount Gambier, has come a long way on her educational journey since arriving in Australia with her family from the Congo in 2013.  

Beginning Year 5 in Australia without knowing a word of English, Lidya graduated Year 12 in 2020 with an ATAR of 88.55, achieving A’s in all her Year 12 subjects.

Her long-term career goal is also coming to fruition, as she is enrolled to study Nursing at the University of South Australia in 2022.
