Outreach to Timor-Leste

Nazareth Catholic Community’s Outreach, in partnership with Rotary, has achieved a great deal in aid projects. These include the construction and furnishing of a Birthing Clinic, the purchase of a Mobile Health Clinic 4WD vehicle, and the shipping of three containers full of desperately needed supplies to Timor-Leste.

Late last Year 11 Outreach participants from Nazareth Community traveled to Triloka Village in Timor-Leste. The purpose of this trip was to install 16 office computers that were donated by Saab Systems. For some in the group this was their third trip to Timor, for others it was the first. The group stayed together for 10 days, before leaving Nicole Carey and Sara Ucci (both third time Timor visitors) to stay on for a further five weeks.  Sara and Nicole graduated from Nazareth Catholic College in 2012.

Nicole and Sara conducted nutrition lessons and playgroups in the local community. They also spent time assisting the Timorese with the new computers and administrative work. “The Timorese were always willing to learn even if they had never used a computer before,” Nicole said.

In addition to their work, Nicole and Sara had plenty of time for relaxing and bonding with the local Timorese. They shared Christmas with their host family in Baucau, celebrating Christmas Eve Mass with over 2,000 people at the local church. “The Timorese Faith enhances their community. They have a real connection with each other and are always smiling. In spending time with them we noticed two inspiring things, their resilience and gratitude. Our challenge back in Australia is to remain resilient and be grateful,” Sara said.

Last Tuesday evening Nazareth had the opportunity to host the West Torrens, Henley Beach and Kidman Park Rotarians for their Intercity meeting. The evening was a great night of sharing and relationship building. For the Nazareth Community it was an opportunity to update the Rotary members on the ongoing work in Timor-Leste.

As well as an opportunity for storytelling, the meeting was a chance to thank the three Rotary Clubs for their partnership and for all they have done for the Nazareth Outreach Projects. Without their consistent support and financial aid Nazareth would not be accomplishing such great developments in Timor-Leste.

The Nazareth Community are extremely grateful to have received donations from the three Rotary clubs, totaling over $3,000. These donations will greatly assist in reaching fundraising targets for this year:

  • A fourth container of equipment to be shipped to Timor
  • The construction of another community building
  • Rehabilitation of the Doctor’s surgery in Triloka
  • A second 4WD vehicle
  • A large electricity generator

Another group of volunteers will also travel to Triloka in July. Numerous fundraising events will be taking place to support these projects. In May, Nazareth invites all people from the wider community to attend the ‘Hear Their Stories’ Breakfast event at the Botanical Gardens Restaurant (8 May) and  their annual ‘Eat Share Give’ dinner hosted by Nazareth staff at the Nazareth Secondary Campus (15 May).
