St Mary Magdalene’s School at Elizabeth Park is working in exciting ways with Italian and Performing Arts lessons. Language & Arts learning activities are integrating using bilingual texts and cultural practices with music, drama and dance. For Carnevale students created their own puppet plays and they also designed and made their own puppet theatres and sock puppets.
In the Early Years teachers recently used ‘Ecco Pinocchio’, a bilingual text. Students learnt Italian words along with action songs and used a variety of percussion instruments to illustrate the story.
Teachers work with their students on cultural items to present at assemblies demonstrating harmony within the School community. The School celebrates its many different cultures at concerts and event celebrations such as the World Cup, using language, song and dance: “From Many Lands We Come, We Are One!”
The needs of students are fundamental in guiding the changes in learning and teaching. Vicky Radetti, Italian Teacher and Paula Giugliano, Performing Arts Teacher said the students respond really well and enjoy this approach. “It allows them to experience being expressive, musical and dramatic whilst learning about Italian language and culture in a rich and purposeful way.”
