IHM students paint the streets for life

Throughout 2015 Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Brompton students, community group Hindmarsh Greening and local artists, together with the City of Charles Sturt, have joined forces to brighten two busy Brompton traffic intersections near the  school.

The idea is to celebrate local community identity and to let traffic know in a creative way, to slow down whilst travelling through the local streets. A year 7 student explained, “We hope the paintings will make cars notice that there are kids and a community around here and to slow down”.

The street art painting was designed with Year 6/7 Students who worked with artists in residence, Helen Crawford and Jacqui Hunter. “Helen was so clever and encouraged us to use our imaginations. She took our ideas and they came to life!” commented one Year 6 student.

Over two fabulous Sunday community days students, staff and families came together with local residents and Charles Sturt Council members to paint the two road intersections to complete the beautiful street art. The initiative will continue with more creative works surrounding the school to add life, colour and beauty to the neighbourhood.

IHM is a vibrant community school, living out its values of love, connectedness and inclusivity through involvement in a creative community arts project. At IHM the community values expression through the arts with the help of artists and community members with talents, skills and expertise to share with the children.

Introduced in 2018 to ensure all students have access to a first-class education, the latest funding under the scheme has been approved for four projects at Catholic schools and 103 smaller projects at independent schools.
