Catholic school wins Royal Australian Mint competition

Congratulations to the very artistic mid-year Reception class at St Joseph’s School, Tranmere for winning the State prize in the CBCA and Royal Australian Mint 2021 Animalia competition.

The students are one of just four lucky winners of the competition run by the Mint as part of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) 2021 Book Week.

The competition followed the release of a special edition commemorative 20 cent coin to mark the 35th Anniversary of the iconic Australian children’s book, Animalia, written and illustrated by Graeme Base.

To win the competition entrants were required to submit a creative interpretation of one page from the Animalia book.

Royal Australian Mint CEO, Leigh Gordon, said “It’s a pleasure to see young people get involved with the CBCA Book Week. We received a number of artistic entries to the competition, and we are thrilled to announce that St Joseph’s School is one of our winners.”

The Chair of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, Wendy Rapee said "The CBCA is thrilled to work together with the Royal Australian Mint on this project as we align on the importance of engaging young audiences to respond to great Australian children's literature with their own creativity. We congratulate all participants and winners."

Each student from the winning class received an Animalia themed library bag and a 35th Anniversary of Animalia 20 cent coloured uncirculated coin.

The coloured coin reimagines the front cover of Animalia, with the main elements of the book sculpted onto the coin.

All 26 animals that are featured on the front cover of the book are included on the coin, but keen coin collectors will need to get out their magnifying glass to see them all!

Congratulations again to class RMM from St Joseph’s School Tranmere and their teacher, Mae!
