The achievements of students with disability in their final year of school have been celebrated at the 2021 Barkuma Transition Program Graduation Ceremony.
The event held at the Adelaide Convention Centre is the culmination of this year’s Barkuma Transition Program, a 12 month program designed to assist final year students with disability and learning difficulties to make the smooth transition from school to future pathways.
The majority of students enrolled in the Program attend Catholic schools.
The Program prepares students with disability to transition from school, bridging the gap from school to work by providing structured learning, skill development, accredited training and work placement opportunities as they embark on pathways beyond school.
Students undertake 2 Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications across the year, with support from Barkuma staff, VET trainers and their school.
Combined with their school SACE studies, students from the following schools participated in the one day per week program in 2021:
Louise Murphy, Education Advisor: Pathways & Transition, Catholic Education SA, said the pride and joy of the graduating students, and their families, was palpable.
“The excellent work of our schools in supporting students to be the best version of themselves is complemented by connecting students with a variety of learning opportunities, including the Barkuma Transition Program,” said Louise.
Congratulations to the 2021 Barkuma Transition Program graduates, their families, and their schools.
Congratulations to the eleven Catholic school students who were among 29 to receive commendations in 2021.
The Governor of South Australia Commendation recognises excellence in Year 12 SACE subjects, and in the qualities young people need for community life, citizenship, and work.
