The Cardijn College Specialist Sports Program, now known as the ‘Academy’ is an integrated academic and sporting program that focuses on the development of skills in Australian Rules Football, Soccer and Netball.
The program was initiated in 2012 to provide students with an opportunity to receive specialist coaching and pursue excellence in their chosen sport whilst also promoting participation in co-curricular and after school sporting competitions. The Academies promote a positive attitude towards health and physical activity while developing valuable personal skills including resilience, confidence and leadership. Expert teachers and coaches lead the skill and tactical development of student athletes enrolled in the program to ensure both a developmental and high performance focus to tailor for individual student needs.
All students enrolled in this program will participate in weekly competitions. This vital element of the program enables students to incorporate skills taught in class time to be utilised in real-game situations and allows for post-game feedback and self-assessment, as well as recovery and injury prevention programs.
Cam Willis who coordinates the Football Academy said that the Sports Academy it making a difference to the young athletes:”The Academy program has already had a significant and positive impact on the lives of the athletes involved. The elite behaviours they have developed through their participation have assisted in their selection for elite junior programs and South Australian representative teams”, he said.
