ATSI Annual Community Dinner, 2015

Taikurri Koma Butto (In Company Together)

On Friday 28th August, 600 people gathered at The Donato Reception Centre for the annual Taikurri Koma Butto (In Company Together) Community Dinner. Masters of Ceremony were Tiwa Sansbury (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College), and Dre Ngatokorua (Sacred Heart College).

Student Presentation Ceremony

Following a ‘Welcome to Country’ by Aunty Alitja Rigney and Aunty Josie Agius and a spiritual and cultural presentation by Yellakka Yellarkarri Leadership Program participants, every student was acknowledged for their achievements this year.  Reception to Year 11 students received a beaded cross, hand-made by Aunty Stephanie Gollan and a small compendium. The Year 12 students were presented with a medallion and congratulated by distinguished guests Aunty Alitja Rigney, Aunty Josie Agius, Father Philip Marshall (Vicar General), Ms Helen O’Brien (Director, CESA) and Ms Brenda Keenan (Director Port Pirie Diocese).

Guest Speaker

Mr Arrin Hazelbane, Rostrevor College Old Scholar and double degree Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies student, was guest speaker. Arrin reflected on his schooling, relating this to the importance of education and making the most of opportunities to realise dreams and aspirations.                     

A Resounding Success

The entertainment provided by CASM (Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music, Adelaide University) and Apakatjah, a duo comprising Jonathan Lindsay-Tjapaltjarri Hermawan and Dion Forrester, was wonderful. There was a great sense of community throughout the evening with many enjoying the music and dancing that completed the evening’s entertainment.

‘It was a marvellous event with good celebration of the achievements of the students from our schools.’ said Director Helen O’Brien
