A talented drummer and graduate of Sacred Heart College has been named as the winner of the 2022 Kathleen McPhee Music Scholarship.
Lachlan Durrans, from the Class of 2022, has received the $1000 award to support his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music.
This sum is given each year to a student from a South Australian Catholic secondary school who has studied classical, jazz or indigenous music at Year 12 level and is continuing the study of music at a tertiary institution.
The scholarship was established in memory of Kathleen McPhee who died in February 2001. Kathleen requested that a sum of money be set aside from her estates to enable a scholarship to be established to help students of music continue their studies at tertiary level.
The scholarship judging panel was impressed by Lachlan’s passion, enthusiasm, broad ability and dedication in his area of study.
A talented and versatile drummer, Lachlan studied Music Explorations, Solo Performance, Ensemble Performance, and Certificate 3 in Music Industry at Sacred Heart College. He was the Year 11 and 12 Arts Captain and received multiple music and academic awards across his final two years at school.
Kathleen’s daughters Felicity and Elizabeth continue to support the scholarship, with Felicity, aged in her 90’s, attending this year’s ceremony at the Catholic Education Office, Thebarton as Lachlan was presented with a certificate by Dr Jill Gowdie, Assistant Director, Catholic Education SA.
Lachlan was joined at the ceremony by his family, music teacher Samara Churchett and Head of Marcellin House Karen Bailey from Sacred Heart College as well as scholarship panel members Samantha Taylor, Scholarship Coordinator, Catholic Education SA and Aaron Dohse, Music & Arts Coordinator, St Ignatius’ College.
Congratulations to Lachlan on winning the annual music scholarship.
