Cans For Kids Project has evolved out of the fundraising efforts of Year 5/6 students at Our Lady of Hope School. All kinds of recyclables are collected daily, cleaned and sorted before selling them to raise money to support the education of Indonesian children in need. Their teacher Pat Kerkenaar travels to Indonesia where she establishes projects with the funds raised.
To date, a free range pig farm has been established in Songan Village, near Mount Batur in conjunction with the Cempaka Putih Foundation, to teach children animal husbandry and to help families pay schooling costs. In addition a micro finance goat project has started on Nusa Penida, with the support of the Friends of the National Parks Foundation. Goats are on loan to 5 families who will breed them to help offset the cost of schooling. After 2 years a goat will be returned, to be loaned to another family.
The most recent project involves 5 children and their families who are being sponsored in the Karangasem Regency in East Bali, with the support of the Adi Buana Foundation. They include 6 year old Baya, 11 year old Arimbawa, 9 year old Ariyanti, 7 year old Hendrawan and 8 year old Dwiyanti and you can learn more about the children in the project.
Twenty students from Catholic schools in South Australia have been named among the winners in two major state-wide Humanities competitions.
Earlier this year, senior school students from across South Australia were invited to enter the 2024 Premier’s Anzac Spirit School Prize and the Muriel Matters Awards.
