On Thursday 15 October Blackfriars Priory School hosted the annual Transition meeting offered to 60 CESA metropolitan schools and colleges. This meeting is part of Catholic Education SA Transition Program which provides schools with the opportunity to share information relevant to supporting a smooth passage for Year 7 students into secondary education.
For young students transition is a time of new beginnings and for some a time of uncertainty. Successful transition requires planning and information to be available for students, families and teachers to support inclusion and successful integration. This planning prepares the school to accommodate and make welcome all students who are more able to feel confident and comfortable, relieving anxiety issues hence promoting success for social and academic learning.
Maria Burford, staff member at Blackfriars spoke of the value of the Transition program:
“Relationships in middle school are extremely important and this features in the transition process. The teacher and school networking evening enables appropriate new class placements for the diverse needs of all students. As vital information regarding resourced students with disability, gifted students and students who experience difficulties is shared, families and staff can collaborate before the start of the new school year”, she said.
Gerald Reith, Whitefriars School, Woodville Park had this to say:
“After 15 years as a Year 6/7 Teacher I have found that secondary school teachers really appreciate the information primary schools are able to share related to social and academic strengths of students who will make the move to high school the following year”.
Special thanks are offered to Dr Sean Mangan for offering to host the annual Transition program for primary to secondary school at Blackfriars Priory School. Also to staff members Brett Knowles, Angela Honner, Maria Burford, Carl Todman, grounds staff, students and members of the Blackfriars P and F for their contribution to hosting this successful evening.
