Bart is Honoured at His Old School

The staff and students of St Mary’s, Glenelg, recently acknowledged past student Bart Cummings by staging a race meeting at Glenelg’s Wigley Reserve providing a great lead up to the Melbourne Cup! Bart began his education at St. Mary’s Memorial School Glenelg on the same school site where students learn, pray and play today.  Students raced their hobby horses, some of which were beautifully creative using mops, brooms and even pool noodles.  They were encouraged to wear horse racing paraphernalia, jockey colours and hats in the spirit of the event.

A Bart Cummings Memorial Racing Cup trophy was presented to the winner.

The students were reminded of his remarkable career, successes and passion which led him from North Glenelg to be King of Cups!

Some student comments:

  • I wore bright coloured gear like a jockey and I rode my hobby horse.  Bart Cummings was a famous horse trainer who went to St Mary’s Memorial school.  William  4/5N
  • We rode our hobby horses in the race and Xavier had a jockey hat with 5 spots on it. Xavier & Lewis RCW.
  • I came 2nd in my horse race.  I used piniata bat and put a pretend horse head on it.  Maddi RCH
  • I decorated a stick and made a horse’s head from paper plates.  Eloise 2H
  • I rode my hobby horse, Bart Cummings won 12 Melbourne Cups and he loved horse training.  Matilda 2H
