There is cause for celebrations at Antonio Catholic School as this year the Morphettvale community celebrates 40 years of having its own Catholic School. On 29 October the school community gathered along with past members of the community and parishioners to give thanks at Mass celebrated in Mary Help of Christians Church. This was followed by morning tea at which the 40 anniversary cake was cut in the impressive gymnasium. Guests chatted about old times and new and were entertained by great music provided by students and Victoria Traeger, Music Teacher.
Ray Higgins, Principal, welcomed everyone with special mention of Sr Marita Mullins (pictured) who was the founding Principal and Fr Rob Egar who was Parish Priest at the time of the opening and he very much supported the development of the school. Fr Rob remembers that Antonio was the first Catholic school to open in the Archdiocese for ten years; its neighbouring Catholic School, St John’s at Christies Beach was opened in 1965.
The financing of Antonio Catholic School was unique as it was the first Catholic School in South Australia to access federal funding for building a school. Additionally it was named after the Antonio family who were significant benefactors and faithful members of the Parish community.
Today the students enjoy contemporary facilities enhanced by the opening of the multipurpose gymnasium in 2014. Congratulations Antonio Catholic School community on this special milestone in the ongoing story of the education of children in the Parish of Morphettvale.
