Gleeson hosted its fourth Junior Relay for Life event for Year 8 and 9 students at the College on Wednesday 28 October. This unique event was the first of its kind in Australia, and was born from the desire of middle school students to be involved in the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life, which senior students attend in May each year.
In 2015 the focus is ‘SunSmart’, with students completing a session during their Personal Development Program (PDP) on the dangers of sun exposure and the ways in which it can be prevented. The Year 8 and 9 students also spent some PDP time walking, running and skipping around the oval as a way of recognising the people in the community who are affected by cancer. Students also enjoyed a range of games including tug‘o’war and the three-legged race.
Students were able to write the names of the special people in their lives who have passed away from cancer, who have fought back and won against cancer and those who are currently battling cancer on a board entitled 'Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back' . Enthusiastic Cancer Council of SA staff were present in support of our Junior Relay for Life and it was wonderful that they acknowledged Gleeson as one of a few schools in Australia that hosts such an event!
Twenty students from Catholic schools in South Australia have been named among the winners in two major state-wide Humanities competitions.
Earlier this year, senior school students from across South Australia were invited to enter the 2024 Premier’s Anzac Spirit School Prize and the Muriel Matters Awards.
