Matilda is at the ready to take up a part-time hairdressing job and continue her study. This is thanks to ‘Style your career’ and Certificate ll in hairdressing which she has completed.
When Matilda was in Year 10, she started her trade training by enrolling in the hair and beauty introductory program – “Style your Career” at Rosewater Trade Training Centre (TTC) – Mount Carmel College in the second half of 2014. This course allowed her to gain an understanding of VET and the pathways it provides into work.
Having completed the ‘Style your Career’ course, Matilda was eligible for Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS) funding in 2015.
Not only did she receive high level training from expert TAFESA staff, Matilda also experienced the unique characteristics of learning in a simulated work environment at the Rosewater TTC.
Matilda’s training has assisted in landing her a part time job at a local salon that provides her with a modest income and a degree of independence. She plans to complete Year 12 next year and then keep her options open with regard to an apprenticeship or continued study.
This is a great example of how collaboration between CESA and TAFESA provides opportunities for secondary students.
Being a student at the Rosewater Trade Training Centre is a great experience said Matilda.
Matilda said
“The environment is an easy place to learn and feel comfortable in.
“At the Trade Centre you are surrounded by a range of caring TAFESA trainers and TTC staff who always want you to achieve your best,” “The facilities are outstanding and I think that deciding in Year 10 to try an introductory course in something that I was interested in was one of my best decisions as this has encouraged me to complete Certificate II in Hairdressing this year,”
“This has opened up a range of pathways and opportunities for me,” she said.
