The Organisation

The Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide is home to more than 250,000 Catholics representing more 15.7 per cent of the population. The Catholic Church employs more than 10,500 South Australians working across its network of parishes, schools and agencies providing aged care, health and social services. The Church also has thousands of volunteers who assist and support their communities.

Central to our mission is sharing the gospel message through various communication platforms, including the award-winning monthly newspaper, The Southern Cross.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Communications, your primary responsibility will be to generate, write and edit stories for The Southern Cross newspaper which is available in parishes and schools in print and online. Currently, two editions per year are inserted in The Advertiser, at Easter and Christmas, to reach a wider audience.

You will actively report on news and current affairs (including written stories, video content and social media posts) relevant to the Archdiocese, with an emphasis on social justice and people living their faith.

You will assist the Director in managing media queries and developing communication strategies for activities and programs in the Archdiocese. In the Director’s absence you will act as editor of The Southern Cross.

You will support diocesan agencies and ministries with producing content for their respective campaigns, including print and online promotions, and for diocesan pastoral initiatives, ministries and events.

This role is a four-day/week or full-time position based in the Diocesan Centre at 39 Wakefield Street, city.

 Key Requirements

Your extensive communications and media experience, exceptional work ethic, interest in significant issues affecting the Church as well as sound knowledge of the ethos and values of the Catholic Church will be key to this role.

Specifically, you will possess the following qualifications, knowledge, experience and attributes:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role covering traditional and social media
  • Editing, subediting and proof-reading experience
  • An ability to meet multiple demanding deadlines
  • Media, communication, PR, or journalistic experience is essential
  • Online and digital media experience and skills, with knowledge of WordPress preferred
  • Video, podcast, photography and multimedia productions skills would be highly desirable
