During the next fortnight, 32 CESA schools are participating in a NAPLAN Online Platform Trial and Readiness Test. These schools have all expressed interest in their students doing NAPLAN tests online in 2017. A range of small and large schools are involved in the platform trial, from both the Adelaide archdiocese and the Port Pirie diocese. Another 25 CESA schools have been selected as sample schools for national online tests and research studies in the second semester of 2016.
The Australian government has decided that all Australian schools will do NAPLAN online tests by 2019, with schools able to opt in for 2017 and 2018. Students will complete NAPLAN tests using a computer or another electronic device, such as a tablet. Benefits of this approach include:
In the 2016 online platform trial, students can do a 40-minute writing test and another 60-minute test that combines reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy. In CESA schools, this will complement the experience many students have had with similar interfaces, through the ACER PAT online tests and the Year 4 ReLAT online assessment.
The purposes of the national platform trial are to provide valuable insights into the capacity of the platform and proposed procedures to deliver NAPLAN Online well next year. Schools can gauge their capacity to run online tests and give students an experience of what the online NAPLAN interface will be like.
The results of the platform trial and testing throughout 2016 will be reviewed by external expert organisations, to ensure all readiness, privacy and security concerns are addressed before NAPLAN moves online from 2017.
The NAPLAN online website includes frequently asked questions and timelines for the introduction of NAPLAN online.

World Youth Day 2016 could be more aptly described as World Youth Week. Embarking from Adelaide Airport, we were fortunate enough to join the pilgrim group from the Archdiocese of Adelaide and the Diocese of Port Pirie on a journey to the City of Mercy, Krakow, Poland.
