Two Catholic schools have been named as winners at this year’s South Australian Architecture Awards for their recent building projects.
Kildare College at Holden Hill and St Martin’s Catholic Primary School at Greenacres were recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects, who award projects that have a considerable impact on the communities they serve and demonstrate generosity toward the broader public.
Kildare College received an Award for Educational Architecture for their new Brigidine Centre designed by WalterBrooke & Associates.
The building includes a full-size netball court that can also be used for whole college celebrations, a dance studio and rehearsal space, and music theory and practice rooms.
“As a student-centred college, the students were heavily involved in the decision-making process on this project. It was really important to have a central courtyard area where students could play and be engaged in outdoor learning”, said Tina Neate, Principal, Kildare College.
The contemporary and innovative project incorporates some new building materials that had not been used previously in South Australia.
“Kildare college and our community are very happy with the completed building”, said Tina.
“The Brigidine Centre enables the college to continue its emphasis as a Performing Arts College. The space makes our students feel happy and welcomed so that they can truly optimise their learning”.
St Martin’s Catholic Primary School received a Commendation for Educational Architecture for their new Junior Primary building designed by Detail Studio.
“Our new building at St Martin’s is a playful learning space for our youngest students”, said Christine Comas, Principal, St Martin’s School.
“Detail Studio has created a modern and engaging learning environment that we are very excited to have as part of our school”.
Part of a national awards program run by the Australian Institute of Architects, the awards presentation was held virtually for the first time this year via a live YouTube stream on July 2.
St Aloysius College was also recognised, awarded the City of Adelaide People’s Choice prize for their Augmented Reality (AR) Community Mural.
