As a fund raiser for Project Compassion a Year 11 Religion class at Mary Mackillop College, Kensington took on the challenge of creating crosses out of palm leaves. With some team work and assistance from You Tube for visual learners, the girls became proficient cross makers for a worthy cause.
Their Religion Teacher and Year 11 Pastoral Care Coordinator Mrs Jeanene Corbo recalls her family’s tradition of making palm crosses on the lead up to Holy Week and Easter. True to form her parents have again this year turned their attention to making palm crosses.
“When I visited my parents, I saw them busily making palm crosses for their parish, ready for distribution on Palm Sunday,” Jeanene said.
“As I watched them lovingly put together the crosses I was taken back to my childhood where this activity was part of my family’s Easter story.” The crosses are symbolic of celebration and hope for the future and they represent the coming together of a faithful community.
This Lent Jeanene decided to bring her childhood tradition to her Religion class and inspire a new generation of young people to immerse themselves in the Easter story.
“My father, as he had done throughout my childhood, sourced some palm branches, stripped the leaves and then cut them to size for my class to create their own palm crosses,” she said.
“I am thrilled that what I loved in my childhood has transcended time and space because the class thoroughly enjoyed the process but also gained much wisdom about the importance of the Easter story.”
