Three Catholic school students and a secondary College have been judged award winners in the 2022 Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools.
Congratulations to:
The awards were presented by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC at a Government House ceremony on February 17.
Established in 2019, the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools program is a cross-sector initiative to develop student awareness and skills as active and informed citizens in a multicultural and democratic society.
Presented in individual, group and school categories, the awards align to essential elements of the Australian Curriculum including humanities and social sciences, english literacy, history, sustainability and civics and citizenship.
With applications open to all South Australian students from Years 5-12, the awards encourage participants to engage as active citizens in the democracy in which they live and to explore and bring attention to current societal challenges and make recommendations for change.
Applicants in the Years 8-10 categories must submit a speech to persuade peers about a societal and/or environmental challenge in South Australia including recommendations for taking action to address the issue.
Cabra Dominican College, Cumberland Park student Giordan was awarded one of only two individual awards in the Year 10 category for his speech focussed on homelessness in SA.
The schools category invites schools to nominate their civics and citizenship education program as an example of outstanding practice.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, Enfield was the sole winner in the secondary schools category for their civics education program that aims to develop students as informed and active citizens in their school and broader community.
St Michael’s College, Henley Beach students Grace and Megan were among 11 winners in the SACE category who received a $250 contribution to their studies for their outstanding applications based on their actions or responses to an environmental, social, political or economic issue or challenge.
Applications for the 2023 Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools are open until Friday 15 September 2023. Judging will be conducted during October 2023 and awardees will be notified in November 2023.
