Catholic schools nominated for Architecture Award

Four Catholic schools have been named among nine entries in the Educational Architecture category at this year’s South Australian Architecture Awards for their recent building projects.

The annual awards celebrate some of the biggest and best architecture and design projects delivered across SA in the past year.

They are part of a national awards program run by the Australian Institute of Architects that recognises the innovative work of architects and promotes local architects and architecture across Australia and internationally.

More than 50 entries have been received in this year’s SA Awards across public architecture, interior architecture, commercial architecture, heritage, residential, urban design and education categories.

Congratulations to the four Catholic school projects named in the Educational category:

St Martin’s Catholic Primary School, Greenacres
Project: New administration and learning building, by Detail Studio

With new administration facilities on the ground floor and five general learning areas on the first floor, St Martin’s new building features a colour palette inspired by the surrounding environment to evoke a connection to nature and create a sense of fun and play. The first floor was linked to the junior primary building completed in 2019 also designed by Detail Studio, which received a Commendation for Educational Architecture at the 2020 SA Architecture Awards.

St Paul’s College, Gilles Plains
Project: Stage 1 redevelopment, by Walter Brooke

The Stage 1 redevelopment at St Paul’s College is in response to its growth to become a co-educational community. There is an emphasis on the connection between internal and external teaching spaces, with external areas able to perform multiple functions as teaching, social and gathering areas. The project celebrates the College’s rich cultural diversity, identity, vision and mission.

Cardijn College, Noarlunga Downs
Project: Centre of innovation and Creativity, by Kennett Builders

The Centre of Innovation and Creativity provides a 21st century learning experience and a vibrant space for collaborative and innovative learning. It is a state-of-the-art creative complex in the senior school precinct that will encourage cross pollination of ideas and skills throughout Cardijn’s three campuses. It incorporates the campus cafeteria, a spiritual retreat, stem laboratories, a robotics laboratory, extensive informal student breakout spaces, a design technology centre, visual arts, fashion and Year 12 learning areas.

St Joseph’s School, Murray Bridge
Project: Stage 1: New Middle Years Learning Building, by Horizon Construction Services

St Joseph’s School expanded to become a Reception to Year 9 school in 2022. Serving the Murray Bridge Mallee area since 1925 in the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people, the school has a connection to their city, its agricultural history and the river. This building design was inspired by this connection, along with the simple beauty of River Murray, the bridges and the silos in the agricultural settings.
