Gleeson College Year 9 students Tyler Dunlop and Caitlyn Monga have been selected to participate in the Concept 2 Creation STEM Sista Program in 2015.
STEM Sista is a student development program for girls, designed to predominately target three key aspects: understanding themselves and others, where they can go in the STEM field which explores engineering pathways and also provides an overview of engineering roles.
Best-selling author and Australian Children’s Laureate, Jackie French achieved a near impossible feat yesterday – she had nearly 1500 children from nine South East schools and kindergartens glued to her every word. Jackie had them giggling and laughing in unison as the young literary-loving contingent joined more than 460,000 children from across Australia to read ‘The Brothers Quibble’ by Aaron Blabey for National Simultaneous Storytime. The event, which coincided with the 11.00am reading across the country, was one of only two national presentations throughout Australia.
The Cardijn College Specialist Sports Program, now known as the ‘Academy’ is an integrated academic and sporting program that focuses on the development of skills in Australian Rules Football, Soccer and Netball.
The community of Tenison Woods College, Mount Gambier last week paid tribute to prominent Mount Gambier resident Pamela Anne O’Connor AM (nee Knox). Mrs O’Connor, 86, was a well-known local historian, author, humanitarian, volunteer and Catholic leader in the Mount Gambier community.
Representatives from nine of our schools in the north western suburbs have been working together to develop new and innovative ways to deliver an ever improving quality of service to all of their students and families. On Tuesday 19 May, a history-making inaugural gathering held at Mount Carmel College for 190 teaching staff from these nine schools: Dominican School Semaphore, Mount Carmel College Rosewater, Our Lady of Mount Carmel College Parish School Pennington, Our Lady Queen of Peace School Albert Park, Our Lady of the Visitation School Taperoo, St Margaret Mary’s School Croydon Park, St Joseph’s School Ottoway, St Patrick’s School Mansfield Park and Whitefriars School Woodville Park.
Local Member and Marine Discovery Centre Ambassador Paul Caica MP, organised the State Minister for Education, Susan Close MP, to visit the Marine Discovery Centre, Star of the Sea School, Henley Beach on Monday last, 18 May. Susan seemed genuinely keen to support the Centre. Visitors to the Marine Discovery Centre are from Catholic, State and Independent Schools.

Catholic Education Week – an initiative of Pt Pirie Director Brenda Keenan – began on Friday the 15th May with a ‘Breakfast for the Stars’ – the students. OPAL kindly donated all the ingredients and the School Spirit Student Leadership group served all of our students and parents a fresh, healthy breakfast. That afternoon the school took part in a ‘Colour Run’ involving obstacle courses, fun activities and games to celebrate the beginning of a special week and raise money for the Caritas appeal for the people in Nepal.
Primary Science at Blackfriars is becoming bigger than the Big Bang Theory. The role of Teacher Victoria Ruggiero as a Primary Science Specialist and a Senior Physics Teacher is to make science ‘come alive’ for the primary students, and equip them with lifelong scientific and problem-solving skills. Victoria teaches classes from Reception to Year 12, which is quite rare.
St Anthony’s Primary School, Millicent, recently opened a Sacred Space in their school grounds. It is a space that combines their commitment to expressing their Catholic identity and environmental sustainability.
